Local bloggers were given an exclusive demonstration of two Johnny Rockets shake recipes: the Reese’s Chocolate Peanut Butter shake and a sneak preview of the Goosebumps shake, which will be released on 9/21 as Halloween approaches. Everyone enjoyed tasting their amazing milk shakes!

Happy 4th of July! Cake Batter Rice Crispy Treats

Cake Batter Rice Crispy Treats!

Cake Batter Rice Crispy Treats!

Happy 4th of July! We are going to a pool party later today, so I looked up this simple Rice Crispy Treat recipe made with dry cake mix and sprinkles. It’s the perfect kids (and adults) treat and easy to eat at the pool! My friend Armi made some recently and it reminded me of the recipe I had saved on my “Baking” Board on Pinterest.

I copied the recipe from

Cake Batter Rice Krispies Recipe
(Slightly adapted from How Sweet Eats, updated in June 2013)

  • 4 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 (10 oz.) bag of mini-marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup yellow cake mix (the dry cake mix, not prepared into a batter!)
  • 5 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 1 (1.75 oz.) container of sprinkles

Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat and add marshmallows. Stir until they begin to melt, then remove from heat. Whisk in the (dry) cake mix, then stir in cereal so it is completely coated with marshmallow mixture. Sprinkle in half of the sprinkles and briefly stir. (Don’t stir too much or the sprinkles will bleed out their color.) Press the mixture into a baking dish (any size will do) and top with remaining sprinkles. Let sit for about 30 minutes before cutting. I find spraying a knife with nonstick spray helps to cut them cleanly.

*Disclaimer: You consume dry cake mix at your own risk.*

Thanksgiving To-Go from Knott’s! #KnottsTurkeyDay

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and you know what that means. Turkey and all the fixings! I love spending time with family and enjoying all the traditional foods of the holiday. Pumpkin pie is my favorite. (I think of dessert more than my meal.) I also love the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and yams. Actually, there isn’t anything on the table that I won’t indulge in.

Preparing everything can be quite a challenge and time consuming. If you have other things to juggle… like entertaining out-of-town family members, decorating the home, managing other activities, how will you get it all done?

Here’s the perfect solution: Purchase your complete Thanksgiving meal from Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant at Knott’s! They have everything ready to-go in a box for you.

This weekend our family experienced an early Thanksgiving meal from Knott’s. Everything was wonderful! The turkey was cooked and ready to go, as well as all the sides. All we had to do was heat and serve!

The box contained:

Complete 12-14 lb. Turkey
1 Quart of Country Apple Stuffing
2 Quarts of Mashed Potatoes
2 Quarts of Gravy
1 Quart of Candied Yams
8 oz. of Cranberry Sauce
8 oz. of Bread and Butter Pickles
1 Quart of Whole Kernel Corn
1 Dozen Farm Baked Rolls
Butter and Boysenberry Preserves
Choice of Boysenberry Pie or Pumpkin Pie

(Suggested serving is 6-8 people, but we were able to serve 12 adults and 3 children.)

Thanksgiving To-Go: Complete Meal from Knott’s!

Pumpkin Pie (We added the whipped cream)

How did everything taste?

All the food was great. The turkey was cooked just right. The Country Apple Stuffing was perfectly seasoned. Candied yams were classic. The big container of gravy was perfect for the turkey and mashed potatoes. Everything tasted just like the traditional Thanksgiving meals I have enjoyed for years. I wasn’t sure what the pickles were for though. That was something different for me. Maybe it was for the rolls. The pumpkin pie was the perfect ending to a turkey dinner. We added whipped cream to the pie and served it with coffee. Everyone had happy tummies. We enjoyed the rest of the evening together while Michael Bublé played on the iPod.

How easy was it?

This was seriously the easiest Thanksgiving meal we ever served. We showed up to my Mom and Dad’s house with the box. We unpacked everything. We put the turkey in the oven for 1 hour. Then we started heating up the side dishes in the microwave. All the sides were packed in microwave-safe containers. Then all the food was placed on serving dishes and we set the table. And walla! Dinner is served!

How much does it cost?

The entire Thanksgiving Dinner To-Go from Knott’s costs $99.95

Slater’s 50/50 in Huntington Beach

Slater's 50/50I met up with my friends Candice Cendana & Chris Voss for lunch last week at Slater’s 50/50 in Huntington Beach. This place is the hottest place for burgers in OC! Why 50/50? Their signature burger has 50% beef and 50% bacon in it. You HAVE to try it. If you are vegetarian, they have  veggie burgers too. They also have a crazy burger called the Peanut Butter and Jellousy. What? It’s ground beef with peanut butter, jelly and bacon!

I love the checklist you get so that you can customize your burger exactly how you want. You pick the size of your patty, type of patty: beef, turkey, veggie or the 50/50 beef/bacon combo. Pick your bread or have it lettuce wrapped and they have all the add-ons you can imagine. The possibilities are endless! This was actually my 3rd visit. The first time I went big and tried their 50/50 beef/bacon burger. You want to scream profanities upon first bite, it’s that good. My 2nd visit I backed off and had a veggie burger. This time with Candice and Chris I had a classic beef burger with brie. Yup, brie cheese on my burger! Sooo yummy! I really wish I had the video camera rolling on my iPhone when Chris took his first bite. I would need a bleep sound to edit out all the cussing. I think he liked his burger. Haha! We did record a clip of him taking bites of his heavenly meat. Yeah, he liked it. We all liked it. A LOT! Candice enjoyed her veggie burger. I just donated blood that day, so a good dose of red meat is just what I needed. I was afraid to indulge in a cocktail though. I think you can get buzzed quicker if you’re missing a pint of blood in ya. So I took sips of Candice’s drink. They have a really good Cucumber Mojito. I enjoyed it twice before. Once I get a really good cocktail at a particular restaurant, I tend to order the same one every time I go back to visit.

All I have to say is Slater’s 50/50 makes a damn good burger. If you haven’t been here before. You are seriously missing out.
